Representatives of West Papua National Coalition for Liberation (WPNCL), the Secretary General Mr Rex Rumakiek, Vice Chairman Dr John Ondowame, and Mr Andy Ayamiseba representative of the Vanuatu mission held discussions with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Bakoa Kaltongga regarding the issue of West Papua.

Considering Vanuatu’s long standing support for the West Papuan struggle for independence, we as the authorized representatives of the WPNCL appreciate the strong and continuing support from the Government of Vanuatu, notably minister Kaltongga for his strong support and commitment towards facilitating peaceful dialogue between the Indonesian Government and the people of West Papua.

Mr Rumakiek stated that the consultation with the government is necessary to have a common understanding and in order to avoid any misinterpretation resulted from this new relationship.

He said it is a normal practice for governments to establish mutually beneficial relationships.

The delegation advised the minister that the West Papua issue should not be an obstacle to the development and strengthening of bilateral relations between the Republic of Vanuatu and the Republic of Indonesia.

In this regard, WPNCL says it recognizes and respects the sovereign rights of the Republic of Vanuatu in pursuing its foreign policy initiatives.
